Turkey’s Time to Shine

September 28, 2011 By Aminda

The country of Turkey may not yet appear at the top of anyone’s list of most innovative nations. But the country sure seems determined to change that. The European Innovation Scoreboard describedTurkey as a “catching up” country, with current innovation performance falling below average compared to the EU-27 but with an above-average rate of improvement. Finance and Support, Firm Investments, Throughputs and Economic Effects have been the main drivers of the improvement in innovation, as the country has achieved rapid recovery from a 2001 financial crisis.

Technology Tools

Innovation Management recently profiled an international open innovation success story spearheaded byTurkey’sEgeUniversity and Vestel Electronics.

The research project is called Magneto, an acronym for; Management of the Outer Edge. The result provides a new level of service assurance and network management support to the “Outer Edge” domain (the point of attachment of home area networks and other restricted area networks) to help Operators, OEMs and Service Providers to deal with the increasing complexity and ever increasing number of connections at the Outer Edge.

Magneto has implemented the use of intelligent systems and process automation in its Autonomic framework to minimize human intervention at the outer edge. The project is said to offer an opportunity for European companies to take a lead in outer edge management. The technology and background obtained from the Magneto project was transferred to Vestel Electronics’ data bank for use in other research by the R&D group.

Creative Consumers

Innovation appears to be found in areas of Turkish culture even outside business and education. British retailer Tesco has been expanding its presence in Turkeyand company executives have observed that doing business in the country is different. “One important thing that distinguishes Turkey is its young and growing population, which is open to innovation and challenges retailers to develop new products and services, states a corporate affairs director.
