The Future of Business is Crowdsourcing

December 17, 2011 By IdeaConnection

US companies will soon be hiring millions of people from all over the world such as designers, coders, marketers and writers, says futurist, author and entrepreneur Ross Dawson, co-author of newly released book Getting Results From Crowds: The definitive guide to using crowd-sourcing to grow your business.

He believes that the crowd is going to fundamentally change the way business operates, not just a few companies here and there.  In addition, this radical shift will expose nearly all US workers to increased competition and opportunities.

“The shift to global work is not a problem for the US, it is a massive opportunity. The future of the economy depends on us embracing crowdsourcing. Companies must get good at creating value with crowds.”

He points to a number of key issues that companies must grapple with, and they include:

  • In order to survive companies must use the best talent, wherever it may be found
  • Those companies that successfully tap the power of the crowd will have distinct advantages over those companies that just rely on internal ideas
  • Crowds will be at the centre of the future work of many organizations as more people work independently. Companies will therefore need to adopt “crowd business models”

It’s no secret that for some companies, crowdsourcing has failed to live up to the hype or their expectations of it. There are many reasons for this including poorly framed and broadly scoped problems, and weakly executed and organised crowdsourcing initiatives.

Dawson’s book offers clear and practical advice on how companies can draw on the power of the crowds to grow their business, and he’s identified seven fundamental crowd business models (plus non-profits).
