Open innovation is to get a massive public platform in the UK with a crowdsourcing initiative to support a major five-part TV documentary.

In the series, an average family home will be transformed into the home of the future with futuristic appliances and gadgets. At the same time an online community with thousands of contributors will submit ideas for new products and services to enhance home life.

The project represents the next stage of E.ON Innovation, a co-creation programme with customers of energy company E.ON. Set up in 2010 the innovation hub has developed four new products and services based on propositions from the crowd, with members of the public being rewarded for their winning ideas.

Now the company wants to reach the wider mainstream audience, and has teamed up with UK TV network Channel 4 and co-creation specialists 100%Open.

Episodes of the TV show will be themed – rest, work, food, play and wellbeing, and there will be five challenges based round these programmes. One challenge will be published each week and community members can present their ideas for new E.ON products and services.

The best ideas could win a home energy makeover worth thousands of dollars. Commercially sensitive ideas can be sent privately to 100%Open.

Consumer Engagement

Roland Harwood, co-founder of 100%Open said: “This project illustrates a new model for innovation and the way companies engage with consumers, where E.ON can not only sell to customers, but also buy from them through a new kind of conversation that in turn, has a direct impact on its innovation pipeline. It is a win-win collaboration between E.ON and the public to deliver new products and services faster, cheaper and better.”
