It’s a nail-bitingly exciting time for the five Zazzle Million Dollar Open Innovation Challenge Finalists as they wait to see which one of them will walk away with the valuable prize on March 22.

The competition was launched late last year and is a search for the world’s next big customizable product.  It’s being organised by custom products platform Zazzle, MIT’s Smart Customization Group and UC Berkeley’s Center for Open Innovation.

Applicants had to create a one-minute video describing their product, explaining why it’s special and how it will contribute to the growing movement of mass customization.

The almost 1,000 high quality entries have been whittled down to the final five, and each one is receiving expert academic and industry help in preparation for the final evaluation by the judges.

The final five are:

Republic Bike

Mission: At Republic Bike, we decided to shake up familiar aesthetic conceits and expectations of what a bike should look like. In fact, we decided to leave it up to you.

Selve
Mission: Open the world of custom fashion shoes for women with a modern approach of (custom) shoe manufacturing.

YouBar
Mission: To provide the perfect nutrition bar for each individual customer.

DODOcase
Mission: TO PROTECT FROM EXTINCTION. To create an extended line of products that protect, preserve and honour beauty, art, craft and purpose. To join the art of traditional artisan work with a modern function.

Designscape
Mission: To offer beautiful, unique accessories and home goods to people who want to engage in the design of what they wear, use, or decorate their homes with, and to establish a genuine connection between people and product through personalized and place-based design… AND MORE.

Videos of all these concepts can be viewed on the open innovation challenge’s webpage.

The winning product will be distributed to Zazzle’s worldwide audience, have access to online design tools, and gain access to a licensing platform for all graphics and artwork.
