Global skin care company Beiersdorf has given ringing endorsements to open innovation and the way social media is affecting how business is being carried out.

The announcement came as part of the firm’s first birthday celebrations of ‘Pearlfinder’, its open innovation platform that encourages external players to share their ideas and solutions.

In an exclusive interview with CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com, Andreas Clausen, the person responsible for open innovation at Beiersdorf explained how Pearlfinder has given it the opportunity to connect with so many smart brains all over the world.

He goes on to say it has created a number of promising research collaborations:

“In the past we were not able to stay in frequent contact with all of our external partners on a broad basis. Now, due to Pearlfinder, they have the opportunity to stay close to us and get insights of directions we would like to go with them.”

During the interview Clausen talked about many of the additional advantages open innovation has brought his company. These include:

  • Strengthening innovation ability
  • Increasing the opportunities to enter new technologies or business fields with partners
  • Reducing the amount of time given to working on scientific challenges

In the Future

Beiersdorf wants to build on its successful first year with Pearlfinder, and going forward is looking to collaborate with more external partners in neighbouring industries.
