Following last year’s successful ‘Get on the Shelf’ contest, Walmart is once again looking to the crowd to get new products in its stores.
This year’s contest is underway and the company is inviting entrepreneurs and businesses “with a big dream and great product” to submit ideas through its website.
Participants have to submit a short video explaining their product idea. And whilst all concepts are welcome, Walmart has emphasized that it’s looking for items that it considers “especially interesting”. These include sustainable beauty products and toys promoting science, technology, engineering, and math education.
Once the contest closes at the end of this month there is a multistage process to select the eventual winners. First, Walmart merchants will offer the best ideas for public voting. Then up to 20 products will be selected for a web series and submitted to the crowd for feedback and another round of voting.
The top five will then be sold through the company’s website and the Grand Winner will be determined by the number of pre-orders it attracts.
Last year more than 5,000 ideas were submitted and the contest selected three new products. They were:
Humankind Water – bottled water that gives 100% of its net profits to toward ending the global water crisis
SnapIt Eyeglass Repair Kit – repair kit that helps you fix your glasses in 30
seconds
PlateTopper – innovative airtight seal that turns plates into food storage containers
