Crowdsourcing Push to Replace Unpopular Logo Proposal

November 10, 2014 By IdeaConnection

yogThere is discord in the city of Yogyakarta on Java. A proposed logo and slogan for the cultural heart of the Indonesian island has caused such an uproar that citizens want to have a go themselves and crowdsource a new emblem that represents the city.

The Problem

Yogyakarta is known locally as Jogja and critics of the new gold logo say that the first letter “J” is all wrong and that the city name reads like Togua.  The tagline of “New Life, New Harmony” hasn’t won too many fans either.

Critics took to social media to voice their annoyance, using the hashtag #togua. It even made it into the list of trending topics from Indonesia.

People Power

To rectify what some see as a bad situation, officials have created a Facebook page so that residents can submit their own ideas. At the time of writing this post, the page has garnered more than 2,000 likes and more than 80 new logo submissions.  These will be submitted to the planning department and cultural council board.

A panel of judges will review all of the submissions and the final decision on which logo and tagline to use rests with the sultan of the province. A decision is expected by the end of the year.

Lame Logos

You can’t please everyone, but in some cases when it comes to logo designs, you can’t please hardly anyone. There are numerous examples of lame logos that perhaps could’ve benefited from a bit of crowdsourcing.

Such as –

madridThe city of Madrid’s logo for its unsuccessful bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. Some people thought the swirly numbers made it look like Madrid was vying for the 2020 Olympics and the colored backing was likened to everything from flip-flops to surfboards and bishop mitres.

lon2012

Staying with sport, and London may well have hosted a fantastic Olympics in 2012, but its logo came in for some stick. According to reports, £400,000 was spent on something that many people regarded as puerile.

Crowdsourcing would’ve been a lot cheaper and the finished product may have garnered much more approval.
