christmas-tree-83121_640Stuck for a present to buy the inventive genius in your life this festive season?  Whether that bright, creative spark is you or a friend or family member, here are some fantastic holiday reads to stimulate the old grey cells even more.

The Future of the Brain: Essays by the World’s Leading Neuroscientists edited by Gary Marcus and Jeremy Freeman – well, err, hopefully it does have a future.  This tome charts the quest to unravel the mysteries of the brain. Original essays by scientists at the top of their game focus on such areas as the implications of brain science for medicine, psychiatry and human consciousness.

Alan M.Turing: Century Edition by Sara Turing – this is a republication of a biography written by his mother.  It charts the life and accomplishments of one of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century.  This new edition also includes a memoir by Alan’s older brother.

Inventions that Didn’t Change the World by Julie Halls – the Victorian age may well have given us the steam engine and light bulb, but it also gave us such forgotten delights as the ventilating top hat, the mustache protector and the artificial leech.  This humorous book focuses on the many bizarre inventions registered with British authorities in the 19th century.

And finally, a recommendation for anyone you know who has at least a passing interest in science or who doesn’t really understand what scientists do.

Eureka: Discovering Your Inner Scientist by Chad Orzel – a wonderful addition to the canon of books on increasing the public understanding of science. Gifted science popularizor Chad Orzel shows the similarities between the processes used to make scientific discoveries and everyday activities such as watching television and playing sports.
