Mark_Zuckerberg,_World_Economic_Forum_2009_Annual_MeetingHe may well be one of the world’s most successful innovators, with billions of dollars in the bank, but Mark Zuckerberg thinks there is still room for improvement.  So, toward the end of 2014, the Facebook Chairman, CEO and co-founder decided to crowdsource his New Year’s resolution. Following the suggestions of 50,000 people, he’s selected one.

It all started in December when Zuckerberg wrote a Facebook post asking for ideas.  He listed resolutions from previous years, including learning to speak Mandarin and meeting one new person every day who doesn’t work at Facebook.

Self-Improvement

As you might expect, there was a large variety of suggestions.  Some were amusing such as a proposal to delete users who send Candy Crush requests while others picked up on the theme of his post i.e. self-improvement.

The resolution he is going to try and keep is to read one new book every other week for an entire year.

Many in his Facebook community suggested reading challenges and in a post, he singled out Cynthia Greco who recommended he reads one book a month that another person chooses..

Zuckerberg has created a page, A Year of Books, where he will post what he’s reading and others can join in discussions if they’ve read those same books.

The first book is going to be The End of Power by Moisés Naím.  It looks at how power is shifting to give individuals more power than they have had before.  And although today’s politicians and corporations still have a lot of power, the author contends that it is less than their predecessors.
