Alan_Turing_photoAlan Turing, one of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century is rightly being lauded again for his achievements thanks to interest in his work generated by the biopic The Imitation Game.

His legacy will live on in the soon to be opened Alan Turing Institute in the UK.  Its headquarters will be based at the British Library in London and five universities will lead its work in maximizing the benefits of big data.

The world-class institute hopes to attract top mathematical brains and data scientists in the UK and from across the globe to work on new ways of collecting, organizing and analyzing large data sets.

Realising the Potential of Big Data

Professor Philip Nelson, the Chief Executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) said:  “It [the institute] will use the power of mathematics, statistics and computer science to analyze big data in many ways, including the ability to improve online security.

“Big data is going to play a central role in how we run our industries, businesses and services. Economies that invest in research are more likely to be strong and resilient; the Alan Turing Institute will help us be both.”

The institute will be headed by five universities, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, Warwick and University College London and will be funded by a £42 million grant from the UK government.

Lives Saved

Turing worked at Bletchley Park during World War II and cracked the Enigma code, allowing German naval messages to be read. His brilliant work is credited with saving millions of lives and helping to end the war two years sooner.
