Cardboard Box Bass Catches OnBreakthrough: When he couldn't afford an $800 upright bass, Bodgon Vasquaf invented a cardboard bass that has since caught the imagination and the hearts of the public. Inventor: Bogdon Music, United States The Story: Success can come from unexpected places. Just ask inventor Bodgon Vasquaf. He was totally broke and couldn't afford an $800 upright bass, so he invented one made up of a cardboard box, weed whacker twine, nuts-and-bolts tuners and a scrabble piece for the bridge. The contraption sounded so good, Vasquaf posted a video on the web. As luck would have it, Good Morning America ran 10 seconds of the footage, and he began getting emails asking to purchase the $99 cardboard bass. With some help from family members who happened to be acoustic and electronic engineers, Vasquaf perfected his idea and created a kit. He began selling the bass on eBay, and sent info on his product to Bass Player Magazine, who featured his story. An uncle helped to fund materials purchase, and from virtually nothing, Vasquaf made $100K in the first year. He won Best in Show at the national trade show NAMM which resulted in getting his bass into retail stores. Using input from his customers, Vasquaf is on his 5th version of the box bass and into his third year of business. It has become a family enterprise with his cousins in charge of manufacturing and his uncle overseeing the business and shipping. They manufacture everything themselves. They are working on new products and prototypes and make the worlds only "Electric Washtub Bass Pickup" which was grabbed by their retailers without even showing it to them. The Bogdon Box Bass has now shipped all over the world, and Vasquaf is having more fun than he's ever had in his life. He never goes to bed without making at least one contact in sales or marketing.
