3D Dead Reckoning Chip Overcomes GPS Dead Zones

3D Dead Reckoning Chip Overcomes GPS Dead Zones
Feb-11-14
The u-blox 3D Dead Reckoning chip is able to compare where you were to where you are now, keeping drivers on track even when no GPS signal is available.

Designed to help overcome the difficulties of urban navigation (where buildings and underground tunnels can block GPS signals), the chip uses the traditional method of navigation known as dead reckoning, which is defined as the process of calculating a current position based upon a previously determined position. Using its array of sensors, including an accelerometer, speed sensors and gyroscope, the u-blox is able to determine the location of the vehicle based on its last GPS check-in. The chip can even track the vehicle’s elevation, which is particularly useful in multistory parking garages known for their GPS dead zones.
