3D-printed hydrogel cubes able to ferment yeast for months could have applications in beer brewing and beyond.
Developed by a team from Washington University, the hydrogel bioreactor is made up of 70 percent water, with the other 30 percent consisting of a yeast-infused polymer. The yeast will begin to ferment when the cubes are submerged in a glucose solution, and will continue to remain active for months at a time.
According to lead researcher Dr. Alshakim Nelson, “Fermentation of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and alcohol is a standard practice in industry.”
