3D Printed Skull Implant
Mar-09-13
The advances in 3D printing have opened the door to variety of uses, the latest being an implant to replace part of the skull.

The Oxford Performance Materials company will be creating the cranium plate, which will replace about 75 percent of the patient’s skull. Recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, the polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) printed implant is an improvement over the materials commonly used in prosthetics, such as stainless steel and titanium, because is more similar to the density and hardness of bone. The PEKK material is also osteoconductive, encouraging bone cells to grow and attach themselves to its surface.

The company is currently working on other 3D bone implants.
