A new method of using 3D technology to print thermoelectric generators could lead to walls that generate electricity through differences in temperature.
The printer, developed by researchers at Fraunhofer, features printing cartridges that dispense extremely thin layers of an inexpensive, thermoelectrically-active polymer paste. Because the technology is similar to that of ink-jet printers, the team believes currently available 3D printers could be suitable for the process.
The goal is to eventually apply the generator films to the interior walls of power station cooling towers, where the generators could harness energy from the station’s waste heat. Although a bit low in efficiency, the area of the towers that would be covered and the low cost of producing the material would make up the difference
