The Purdue phoneme project team has developed a device that would let users read their text messages via a wearable cuff.
The team, which also includes groups from MIT and Facebook, has mapped the 39 phonemes in the English language and translated them into haptic feedback signals that are transmitted via the cuff’s 24 vibrating devices. The cuff is worn around the forearm, allowing the wearer to feel each vibration and interpret the sensation as an individual phoneme (the sound that makes up the word).
In addition to realizing the goal of encoding speech into physical sensations, the wearable cuff could have applications ranging from assisting people with disabilities to offering a private method of communication.
