Acoustic Technology Could Reduce Aircraft Accidents

Acoustic Technology Could Reduce Aircraft Accidents
Feb-18-18
An innovative acoustic detection technology could detect potentially dangerous blockages in aircraft pressure sensors.

Pitots, the pressure sensor tubes that help determine aircraft speed, can be blocked by insects or ice, disrupting data to the pilot and even causing a devastating crash. To help prevent such accidents, researchers have adapted the same technology used to detect blockages in the ears of newborns. The team discovered the technique could be used to reliably determine the variations in blocked and unblocked reflected acoustic waves, even in very small or non-cylindrical shapes.

According to Dr. Thomas Rendall, co-author of the paper,“In principle, the method could be adopted to help inform pilots if Pitots are blocked before they take off, or if they subsequently become blocked during a flight.”
