Adaptable Ski Boots Travel Uphill and Down

Adaptable Ski Boots Travel Uphill and Down
Dec-28-13
Recognizing that backcountry skiers often walk uphill as much as they ski down, some ski boot manufacturers have designed more adaptable boots to help ease the hike up while still providing enough support for the ski down.

The K2 Pinnacle 130 can switch from walking to skiing modes with the simple flip of a lever, which controls a carbon-fiber insert. In ski mode, the insert slips into the upper part of the boot, providing more stability, and then can be flipped into the cuff for more freedom of movement in walking mode. The Black Diamond Factor MX also adds more range of motion—more than any other alpine boot, in fact. The boots feature a cuff that rotates on ball joints and a whale-tail cutout in the calf that allows the boot to more naturally and provides more room for the leg to flex.
