Adhesive Releases Under UV Light

Adhesive Releases Under UV Light
Dec-17-18
An innovative adhesive that releases under exposure to UV light could have applications ranging from wound dressings to wearable robotics.

The adhesive, which can securely adhere wet materials, was created by a team from Harvard SEAS and Xi’an Jiotong University as an alternative to standard materials. Instead of requiring “brute force” to be removed, the new adhesive relies on a layer of polymer chains sandwiched between the materials to be secured. When pressed together, the polymer chains function as a molecular suture to connect the materials via topological entanglement. Exposure to UV light will cause the securing network to dissolve, and the team is working on tuning the structure so it can be ‘unstuck’ with the safer, near-infrared light.
