The novel Aerial Biped robot gets a balancing boost from its quadcopter head.
Developed by a team from the University of Tokyo, the Aerial-Biped was created with the goal of building a robot that won’t fall over. To that end, the spindly-legged bot features a quadcopter ‘head’ that keeps its body upright, while an artificial intelligence known as reinforcement learning helps the robot move its legs in time to its motion.
Thought still in the proof-of-concept prototype phase, the Aerial Biped is more of an exploration into novel forms of locomotion, though the team believes the design could be useful in entertainment.
