An AI-equipped smart prosthetic leg able to anticipate and respond to the user’s actions offers a more natural gait and better overall balance.
The prototype leg prosthesis was created by a team at the University of Utah, and relies on specialized force and torque sensors to consistently track the leg’s motions. An onboard computer processes the information via AI algorithms to determine what action the user is performing and automatically adjust the ankle and knee joints to provide optimal balance.
The leg has performed impressively in tests on volunteers, with elderly users even reporting a ‘Terminator-like’ experience, since powered prostheses have not been typically designed for older users.
