Air Shield Cloak Offers Added Protection from Explosives

Air Shield Cloak Offers Added Protection from Explosives
Mar-25-15
A Boeing engineer has created an "Air Shield Cloak" that uses super-heated air to protect soldiers from the shock waves caused by explosions.

Although armor can protect soldiers from shrapnel and debris, the sound waves from explosions travel through the body and do serious damage. Based on the knowledge that shock waves travel more quickly through heated air, the system works by detecting an explosion and triggering an arc generator to create an arc of electricity between two circuit ends. This arc heats particles of air, which causes the shock wave speed up and change direction, essentially bending away from the person behind the "cloak." The cloaking system could be mounted on military vehicles, lessening the impact of IEDs and other explosives.

Brian J. Tillotoson, the inventor of the device, has received a patent for the cloaking process.
