Allite Super Magnesium Alloy Opens New Doors

Allite Super Magnesium Alloy Opens New Doors
Sep-15-18
The recently declassified high-strength, low-weight Allite Super Magnesium alloy could open the door to a new range of constructs, from bikes to smartphones.

Allite’s Super Magnesium Alloy, which is both lighter than aluminum and cheaper than carbon fiber, has been in development for more than a decade, but has been marked for use in classified defense applications. However, now that the material has been available for the consumer, bike manufacturers may be the first to benefit.

The Allite alloys come in three types, each with individual strengths and all extremely resistant to wear and corrosion with exceptional hardness and insulation properties. The alloys, which are 75 percent lighter than steel and 56 percent stronger than grade-one titanium, are also the only available magnesium alloys that will melt. And as an added bonus, the Allite team states the materials have "the lowest carbon footprint of any structural material throughout the value chain," and are 100 percent recyclable.
