Amphibious Drone Takes Water Samples

Amphibious Drone Takes Water Samples
Oct-17-19
The Pelican amphibious drone automates water testing to deliver results in a matter of minutes.

Typically, water-testing can be a labor-intensive process, requiring on-site visits and delivery to a lab. In contrast, the prototype Pelican drone from the team at Delft University can be transported to the water in question, where it will fly over the surface and scan it with its onboard hyperspectral camera. If a potential problem is detected, the drone will take a sample and transfer it to a portable CytoSense flow cytometer, where results are delivered in just minutes.

According to Kevin van Hecke, of Delft's Micro Air Vehicle Lab, "It is much faster and more efficient at checking for blue-green algae, for example. The combination of a drone and flow cytometry allows us to monitor water quality autonomously and in real time."
