AntBot Navigates by the Sun and Steps

AntBot Navigates by the Sun and Steps
Feb-15-19
Instead of GPS, the AntBot navigates by following the sun and counting its steps.

Inspired by the navigation system of the desert-dwelling Cataglyphis ant, the AntBot determines its location based on the light in the sky and how many steps it has taken, while an optical movement sensor visually measures how far the bot has traveled. In tests, AntBot was able to explore 46 feet and return to base within 0.4 inches.

The team believes the AntBot could be useful in search and rescue missions where GPS is not available.
