Antimicrobial Glass could Reduce Infections

Antimicrobial Glass could Reduce Infections
Oct-12-19
An antimicrobial glass could be installed in catheters to reduce the risk urinary tract infections and improve patient care.

The antimicrobial glass was developed by a team from Aston University by making rods of glass coated with antibacterial zinc oxide, which were then sliced into thin discs. When the discs were placed in bacteria samples, the zinc dissolved from the glass and killed most of the bacteria within 24 hours. The team hopes the bacteria-killing glass could be placed in a catheter tubes where it destroy bacteria without blocking urine flow.
