The APPRAISE system is able to detect internal bleeding using a standard patient monitor and computer, allowing medical teams to take life-saving measures before reaching the hospital.
Developed by teams from Massachusetts General Hospital and the U.S. Army, the APPRAISE system (Automated Processing of the Physiological Registry for Assessment of Injury Severity) is made up of a patient monitor that tracks blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate. That collected data is then processed through a computer program that determines the likelihood of the patient suffering from internal bleeding. The entire system can fit easily in a medical transport vehicle.
In tests on more than 200 patients, the APPRAISE system was able to identify 80 percent of the patients with life-threatening internal bleeding, compared to the 50 percent identified by the medical rescue team.
