Aritifical Womb Helps Preemies Develop

Aritifical Womb Helps Preemies Develop
Apr-26-17
Researchers have developed an artificial womb that could help premature babies develop more fully and reduce complication risks.

Developed by a team from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the simulated womb is made up of a bio bag that will encase the infant in a flow of artificial amniotic fluid. As the infant grows inside the device, its lungs are supported by the fluid environment just as in the womb. This allows the fetus to develop more normally, reducing the risk of long-term complications.

Currently, the artificial womb has been tested on fetal lambs, with encouraging results.
