Augmented Reality System Helps Surgeons from Afar

Augmented Reality System Helps Surgeons from Afar
Aug-29-15
An augmented reality system that allows remote physicians to “assist” during a procedure could help save lives on the battlefield.

The AR system is not entirely new, as there are systems in use that allow a remote surgeon to markup that video transmitted from the surgeon working on the patient. Those systems, however, place the markup on a separate monitor, which requires the working surgeon to constantly look from the monitor to the patient.

Created by a team at Purdue University and Indiana University School of Medicine, the STAR (System for Telementoring with Augmented Reality) makes use of a transparent display positioned over the patient’s body in the operating field. This allows the on-location surgeon and the remote surgeon to view the patient and the notes from the same point of view, allowing for a more natural interaction.
