The BallCam gives football fans a new angle on the game by capturing smooth video from a football as it spins through the air.
The camera set-up itself is not that complex- a GoPro HERO 2 camcorder inserted into a hole cut in the side of the ball. What makes the system unique, however, is the algorithm used to process the video from a ball spinning at up to 600 rpm. The algorithm is designed to monitor for and discard video frames that show only the sky. When the remaining frames are stitched together, the result is a relatively smooth, wide-angle view from the side of the football.
Although the BallCam will probably not be approved for official use, the developers believe it could be used for training and for video productions.
