Battery-Free Implant Promotes Weight Loss with Nerve Stimulation

Battery-Free Implant Promotes Weight Loss with Nerve Stimulation
Dec-18-18
A new battery-free device that stimulates the vagus nerve to suppress appetite could offer an innovative new way to fight obesity.

Developed by a team from the University of Madison-Wisconsin, the tiny device is implanted via a minimally invasive procedure, where it is powered by the motion of the stomach walls. From there, the device delivers gentle electric pulses to the vagus nerve that "correlate with the stomach's motions, enhancing a natural response to help control food intake," according to study author Xudong Wang. The device is reversible, and since it does not require a battery, it is also much smaller and less complicated to manufacture.
