Bio-Film Sheets Clean Dirty Water

Bio-Film Sheets Clean Dirty Water
Jul-28-16
Researchers have created graphene-based biofilm sheets that can be laid on top of pools of water to make the water safe to drink.

Developed by a team from Washington University, the sheets are made up of two layers of a nanocellulose material that has been produced by bacteria. The top layer of the sheet contains graphene oxide, which will heat up when exposed to sunlight. When the biofilm sheets are spread on top of the water, the water is drawn through the layers and then evaporates at the top. Pollutants are left behind within the film, and the fresh water can be skimmed off the top.
