A new nanodot-based smartphone battery prototype able to reach full charge in only 30 seconds could not only keep us talking longer, but may also bring us a step closer to the quick-charging electric car.
The Israeli startup StoreDot created the batteries using their own nanodot technology. Made from chemically synthesized bio-organic peptide molecules, the nanodots are non-toxic and biocompatible, as well as relatively inexpensive to manufacture. They are also very small, which gives them improved electrode capacitance and electrolyte performance, with the company's first prototype demonstrating a discharge rate similar to that of lithium-ion cells and an estimated capacity (for a smartphone battery) of about 2000 mAh.
StoreDot CEO Doron Myersdorf believes that by modifying the electrode, the technology could also be applied to electric cars, which could drastically improve their consumer appeal.
