Biodegrable Microbots Fight Tumors with Heat and Drugs

Biodegrable Microbots Fight Tumors with Heat and Drugs
Sep-14-19
Biodegradable microbots able to target tumors with heat and medication offer a new way to treat cancer.

Created by a team from the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, the microbots provide two different cancer-treatment options—medication and hyperthermia—with minimal side effects. The bots can be directed to the tumor site, where an alternating magnetic field is externally applied to trigger the magnetic nanoparticles within them to generate heat. The heat also increases the diffusion rate of the bots’ cargo of medication, and both treatments can be tuned for optimal effect. When the microbots have completed their deliveries, they will then biodegrade safely in the body.
