Bioengineered Personalized Bone Grafts

Bioengineered Personalized Bone Grafts
Jul-20-18
Bioengineered bone grafts for large bone defects could offer a safer and more effective treatment for bone injury or disease.

Too often, synthetic materials or bone grafts used to treat bone defects are met with an immune response that interferes with the implant—particularly if the graft is quite large. To overcome this obstacle, the team from the New York Stem Cell Foundation developed a bioengineered bone graft made from small segments of scaffolding with patient-specific stem cells grown on them. The cells are grown in a bioreactor, ensuring uniform growth, and the completed segments are assembled into the final graft using a biocompatible bone adhesive.
