Bionic Eye System Sees Results(7)Mar-15-09 A new bionic eye system stimulates the optic nerve from its station on the retina inside the eye.People whose sight has been reduced or lost because of a degenerative eye disease have benefited from a parade of seeing devices that do their best to bring image data from the outside world to the optic nerve. Some technologies are beginning to offer limited sight to some users. The Argus II Retinal Implant is enjoying remarkable results. The second-generation Argus takes images captured by a camera and video processor mounted on the wearer's sunglasses and transmits them wirelessly to a tiny receiver on the outer surface of the eyeball, inside the head. The internal receiver delivers the image data through a tiny cable to an array of electrodes positioned on the user's retina, inside the eyeball. The electrodes stimulate specialized cells at the back of the eye that respond to light. The optic nerve interprets these stimulations the way they would interpret light. ![]() [GIZMAG.COM] [NEXT]
