Blocking Electrodes for Vagus Nerve Stimulation

Blocking Electrodes for Vagus Nerve Stimulation
Jan-23-17
A new method of vagus nerve stimulation improves the treatment by blocking unwanted nerve activity that could lead to side effects.

While vagus nerve stimulation has been shown to help patients with chronic inflammation, the treatment also brings unwanted side effects. To alleviate these effects, the team from Georgia Tech developed an electrode with a kilohertz frequency that prevents unwanted nerve stimulation by “forcing the stimulation from the stimulating electrode to only go in one direction.”

Tests on rats have been positive, and the team believes the technology could be easily added to existing devices.
