Breathprint Could Indicate Diseases

Breathprint Could Indicate Diseases
Apr-06-13
Researchers in Switzerland are developing a way to detect diseases by analyzing a person’s specific ‘breathprint.’

While the potential usefulness of analyzing breath for medical diagnosis has been known (remember the cancer-sniffing dogs?), it is rarely done in professional medicine because the results can be too general. To help fine-tune the process, the research team used a mass spectrometer to detect the individual chemicals and elements in the exhaled breath. This allowed them to gather specific details about the composition of each person’s breath and led them to discover that the ‘breathprint’ stayed constant over time. The researchers believe that if they can identify the biomarkers of specific diseases, they will be able to diagnose an individual based upon their ‘breathprints.’

Unlike the wait when analyzing blood or urine, the information gathered from the breath is available within seconds after the sample is delivered.
