Created with the visually impaired in mind—but useful to everyone—the Bump Mark bio-reactive label will change texture as the food within begins to spoil.
Although inspired by her work with the blind, Solveiga Pakstaite also developed the label to be easily readable by the rest of the population because, as she said, ". . . the sad reality is that new solutions only get implemented by companies if the benefits are useful to the majority." The Bump Mark can be used with existing packaging, and is made up of a layer of gelatin (which decays at the same rate as other proteins) coated over a bumpy plastic sheet. The sheet feels smooth at first, but as the gelatin ages and becomes less solid, the bumps begin to emerge. The gelatin can be applied in coats of different thicknesses to match the expiration date of the food.
The Bump Mark has won the James Dyson Award for product design.
