Buoys Monitor Water Quality in Real Time

Buoys Monitor Water Quality in Real Time
Apr-29-16
Water-sampling buoys able to continuously monitor water quality could offer a more efficient way to warn swimmers of polluted water.

Developed by a team from Michigan State University and the U.S. Geological Survey, the buoys are equipped with sensors able to gather water data such as temperature, clarity and bacterial content. That information is then relayed to a central location via an onboard cellular modem, allowing officials to determine in real-time whether or not a beach should be closed.
