Car Safety System Puts Calls on Hold

Car Safety System Puts Calls on Hold
May-15-11
Microsoft researchers are developing an in-car warning system that can detect upcoming obstacles and automatically put cell phones on hold.

The researchers had test subjects drive simulated routes with a variety of obstacles, such as construction zones and heavy traffic. In tricky driving situations, the alert system activated, warning both the driver and the caller of the increased danger ahead and ending the call if the driver himself did not. This new system resulted in a drop in driver errors from once every 1.4 minutes to once every 7.1 minutes.

While the technology to automatically detect obstacles on the road is still in development, the new system is a step toward addressing the problem of distracted drivers.
