A bank in Japan is developing a biometric ATM that will authenticate a user by a palm scanner and PIN rather than an ATM card.
Conceived in response to the many people who lost their ID cards during the 2011 earthquake, the ATMs are based on scanning technology developed by Fujitsu, which identifies the user based on vein patterns in the hand. To use the new ATM's, customers will must first register their biometric data with their branch, and will also need to supply their birthdate and PIN.
While there are ATM with integrated biometric systems installed, the new ATM from the Japanese bank Ogaki Kyoritsu will be the first to do away with cards entirely.
