Casa FENIX Emergency Shelter Can Evolve as Needed

Casa FENIX Emergency Shelter Can Evolve as Needed
Jul-10-14
Designed with disaster victims in mind, the solar-powered Casa FENIX home can evolve over time, expanding from an emergency shelter to a permanent home.

Created in part by the Chilean Casa FENIX team for this year's Solar Decathlon, the modular shelter was designed to function first as a "survival module" with 150 square feet of space. Once the disaster has passed and things have settled down a bit, the family using the shelter can choose to add additional modules, including a bathroom and kitchen. The design also features a "Sun Space" module, which keeps the indoor temperature constant using a passive solar design.

Chile is subject to more earthquakes than anywhere else in the world, and it was the frequent need for emergency shelter that inspired the Chilean team to create the modular design.
