Catching Hackers in the Act

Catching Hackers in the Act
Mar-28-20
Vulnerable infrastructure systems such as power generation and traffic control may have a new weapon in the war against malicious hackers.

Researchers have discovered a new technique that could automatically identify when a system was under attack and trigger an automatic shutdown.

The concept involves "watermarking" data during transmission, a technique that can show when data is being tampered with in real-time. A specialized signal is transmitted at the same time as the data, similar to "background noise" so that monitors can detect any disruptions and take immediate action.
