Catheter Coating Offers Early Infection Detection

Catheter Coating Offers Early Infection Detection
Apr-30-16
A catheter coating able to detect infections and notify health personnel could reduce the need for antibiotics while also increasing patient comfort.

Developed by a team at the University of Bath, the coating is meant to be applied to the tip of catheters, where it will change the color of urine to a bright yellow if an infection is detected. The color change can be identified through the transparent collection bag, and lab studies showed that the system can detect infections in catheters twelve hours before a blockage forms.
