Change Your Mood with Zap to the Head

Change Your Mood with Zap to the Head
Nov-13-14
The startup Thync hopes to bring brain stimulation into the hands of the consumers, allowing us to control our moods with a jolt from a smartphone.

The mood-altering device works using a type of transcranial direct current stimulation, which has been tested for years but is not yet approved by the FDA. While most TDCS techniques attempt to apply the current directly to the brain, the method used by Thync targets nerves and muscles just under the skin via a set of electrodes attached to a smartphone. In this way they were able to still achieve a powerful effect while being much less invasive.

In tests on 2000 volunteers, two out of three participants reported a moderate to strong response. The company now hopes to begin marketing its device in 2015, though they still need to work out the best way to teach the user how to place the electrodes.
