Charging Mobile Phones With Sound

Charging Mobile Phones With Sound
Aug-17-14
A prototype mobile phone able to harvest the energy of background noise to keep itself charged marks a turning point in creating ways to harness energy from sound.

The technology of using sound to charge mobile phones was first proposed four years ago by a Korean team, who used zinc oxide nanowires to convert vibrations into electricity. However, the team at that time was not able to generate enough current to charge a mobile phone.

Carrying on that research, the joint team from Nokia and Queen Mary University grew an array of zinc oxide nanorods on a plastic sheet, and then sandwiched that sheet between a pair of contact sheets made from aluminum foil. In tests, the prototype proved able to generate up to five volts using just "everyday background noise" like voices or traffic sound, which is enough to charge a mobile phone.
