Cheap Alternative to Touchscreens Uses Electromagnetic Field
May-01-13
Researchers have developed a way to turn any LCD monitor into a touchscreen by tapping into a home’s own unique electromagnetic field.

The technology, called uTouch, features a simple sensor able to harness the low levels of electromagnetic interference produced by most consumer electronics. The sensor measures the signals as they are given off normally by the LCD screen, and then how the change when someone gestures near the screen. Software using machine learning was able to determine whether the gestures were commands or random ‘noise,’ which would allow the system to be programmed to respond to particularly common, such as starting or pausing a video.

The technology could save money and resources by allowing existing screens to be cheaply modified into touchscreens.
