Checking Blood Sugar with Light

Checking Blood Sugar with Light
Aug-26-14
A proof-of-concept alternative to glucose monitoring uses light to check glucose levels, eliminating the need for needles and test strips.

The system takes advantage of a quantum cascade laser that produces mid-infrared frequencies, which are more suitable for detecting changes in glucose levels than the more common near-infrared frequencies used in medical devices today. The device operates by beaming a laser onto the patient's hand and then measuring the resulting scattering and absorption of the dermal interstitial fluid, and has proven to have an 84 percent accuracy level. Though the team still needs to reduce the size of the device in order to make it portable, it holds promise as an alternative to current glucometers.
