Child Robot that Mimicks Infant Learning

Child Robot that Mimicks Infant Learning

(13)Apr-05-09
Osaka University professor Minoru Asada is leading a team of researchers who have developed a child-like robot that he says is now developing social skills after 2 years of interacting with people.

The 4'4" robot, called the "CB2", is designed to process information and learn like a human infant. It evaluates peoples' facial expressions much like a baby would do with it's mother. To do this, the robot uses eye-caneras, then processes the information and matches it with physical sensations.

In the two years since the CB2 was created, it has taught itself how to walk with the aid of a human and can now move through a room quite well using 51 "muscles" driven by air pressure. The team expects that it will develop further "species" of robots with learning abilities somewhere between a human and a chimpanzee.
